BENSONHURST — A CELEBRATION NEXT WEEK TO HONOR Chinese-American railroad workers gets a preview in Bensonhurst. Assemblymembers William Colton (D-47) and Grace Lee (D-65) and Councilmember Susan Zhuang (D-43) will hold a press conference on Saturday, May 10 — the 156th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, the challenging construction which owes much to the hard work of Chinese immigrants.
The press conference takes place at Colton’s office on Kings Highway. Four days later on May 14, he will introduce a resolution recognizing the achievements of the Chinese-American railroad workers, many of whose descendants live in Brooklyn today. Colton plans to bring a group of constituents up to the state capital to view the exhibit and be present when the resolution is voted on by the Assembly.
Supporting this effort is the Assembly’s Asian Pacific American Task Force, which is assisting in coordinating an exhibit in Albany that chronicles the history of those often-forgotten early laborers.
